ABSTRACT

It is believed that diabetes mellitus [DM] increase the susceptibility to Helicobacter Pylori [HP] infection, but there is little information about the role of DM in being infected patients with HP. We studied the frequency of HP in diabetic patients referred to Taleghani hospital during 2003-2004. In this case-control study, frequency of HP in diabetic patients referred to Taleghani hospital was studied. Case group consisted of 84 patients with documented diabetes mellitus and control group included dyspeptic patients without DM who were been matched to the case group. Both case and control groups underwent endoscopy. Patients who had history of using antibiotics during the previous month or proton pump inhibitors during the past week were excluded. Urease test was performed in all patients. In negative unease test, biopsy was taken to evaluate histological study of HP. Mean age of case and control groups were 47.5+/-10.2 and 47.6+/-10 years, respectively. In both groups, male to female ratio was 46 to 36. Nineteen patients [22.6%] have diabetes type1 and others [77.4%] have diabetes type 2. Frequency of HP in case and control groups were 47 [51.1%] and 45 [48.9%], respectively and there was no significant differences between two groups. Odds ratio for being infected with HP in diabetic patients was 0.95 [95%CI: 0.7- 1.3]. This study didn't demonstrate any relation between DM and HP in adult patients. So, high frequency of dyspepsia in diabetic patients can be attributed to other factors such as autonomal disorders

ABSTRACT

The route of person-to-person transmission of helicobacter pylori may be either fecal-oral or oral-oral, because the bacterium is found in both dental plaque and feces. We assessed the prevalence of H. pylori, which reflects present or past infection in dental students exposed occupationally to dental plaque. We examined the sera of 68 dental students and residents [24 residents and 44 students] and 69 age-matched controls by using quantitative ELISA for antibodies of lgG class to H. pylori. The proportion of dental group seropositive for H. pylori was [39 of 68] 57.4%, the proportion of control group seropositive for H. pylori was [40 of 69] 58%. There was no significant difference between groups. We conclude that dental practice in dental students does not increase the risk of H.pylori infection

ABSTRACT

Achalasia is a motility disorder of unknown etiology. Diagnostic techniques include Barium esophagram, simple and widely available, radionuclide transit/emptying scintigraphy, a low-cost procedures, easy to perform and widely available, well tolerated and require minimum cooperation by patients and esophageal manometry that continues to be used widely in clinical practices, primarily because of its perceived value. Aim of this study was to compare methods of manometry, barium swallow and scintigraphy before and after pneumatic dilation. 17 patients with achalasia of cardia were evaluated both symptomatically and objectively [esophageal manometry, timed barium esophagram, and scintigraphic emptying Index] before treating them with pneumatic dilation and after. The degree of patient symptom

ABSTRACT

Medical education of IRAN witnessed a lot of changes in recent years. Evaluation of educational activities has been one important intervention introduced in this regard. We designed a new format and evaluated the function of educational groups of Tabriz Medical Science University at 2000. Educational groups, structure and function of internal medicine ward, infectious disease group, urology ward and genecology ward were compromised with each other. There was a lot of difference between function of educational groups. In some groups, students had no pleasure from the education. it is necessary to investigate the problems of education and solve them by regular and exact program and educational intra group evaluation

ABSTRACT

A 33-year-old female presented with intermittent abdominal pain and severe attacks of lower gastrointestinal [GI] bleeding since 2 weeks. She has had history of irregular menses in last 3 months. In the labeled RBC-Scan study, the bleeding site was detected in left upper quadrant [LUQ]. In surgery, a tumor with the diameter of 2x1cm in a 65 cm distance of ligament of Trietz was detected. In pathological assessment jejunal metstatic choriocarcinoma was reported. Generally, choriocarcinoma is very rare among the intestinal metastatic tumors, including less than 5% of these tumors. Its presentation is acute lower GI bleeding and organ rupture, especially splenic rupture. These tumors will respond appropriately to the treatment in initial stages. Chemotherapy is the treatment of choice in these tumors
